It's not a mind blowing movie, but its definitely not some garbage movie either. It gives you what you want in a gangster movie without feeling overdone.Even though the main character is a coke dealer, it makes you want to root for him to succeed against the rival dealer, the dirty cops, and the drug cartel. It's a modern day black gangster movie with action, cars, girls, drugs, and enough bling to blind you with its rap video feel. I'm not sure what movie other are watching that think Superfly is terrible. The white imposition of the blaxploitation label really unnecessary hurt this film. I don't condone the drug hustle but this film, like Scarface, gives an entertaining but still terrifying look into that world with good acting, great action, and some humor. With the exception of the way over the top threesome, the film was very good. It also does not hurt that Superfly is freaking beautiful.
Like it or not, this film aptly represented a very unfortunate yet existent element of black subculture.
In comparison to this movie, Ocean's 8 with its buoy from the Me Too movement is a joke. We glorify more poorly written and acted white gangster movies all the time. This was a well-written, exciting, and well-paced film that does not deserve the low critic reviews it is getting. And yeah, the fact that it's a black led, R Rated blockbuster doesn't hurt - if nothing else, the audience craves something DIFFERENT. Thanks to some really charming supporting characters and interesting looking shots from Director X, Superfly manages to just succeed despite itself. Or maybe, rather, at the end of a story (even if the horrifically green screened pre credits tag suggests something otherwise), which gives this tale a sort of an Unforgiven / Logan vibe. but distinguishes itself just a LITTLE bit by starting in media res. It's a prototypical tale of drugs and vice. In spite of some silly acting (you get the sense that they stretched in order to find gorgeous mixed girls to do some reaction takes), ridiculous dialogue, and the weirdest sex scene in recent memory, Superfly entertains.
